With top speed into the green

The Mercedes-Benz A-Class E-CELL is the first pure-bred star-branded electric automobile to be built in a small series of 500 vehicles.

The five-seater eco model runs on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and has a surprisingly long range of up to 200 kilometers (NEDC).

The performance, too, is impressive. Delivering a maximum power of 70 kW (95 hp) and a high torque of 290 Nm – all with nothing more than a quiet hum – it offers speedy yet stress-free motoring. Together with its F-CELL siblings, which are powered by fuel cells, the A-Class E-CELL is pointing the way ahead to a greener future.

Mercedes-Benz has kindly loaned us one of its fleet of A-Class E-CELL cars, which we take to events to underscore and exemplify our commitment to protecting the environment.

Our environmental commitment at Siemens Enterprise Communications is evident not just in our product portfolio but in the way in which we operate as a company.

Following are a number of examples:

Environment-friendly vehicle fleet
Siemens Enterprise Communications has ordered 1,400 Opel Astra Caravan ecoFLEX cars for its vehicle fleet. The compact model emits just 119 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer and consumes just 4.5 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. Based on average annual distances traveled, this translates into a reduction in fleet carbon emissions of 2.254 metric tons and a saving of 1,029,000 liters of fuel.

OpenStage phones get a Blue Angel environmental label

Introduced in 1978, the Blue Angel (“Der Blaue Engel”) seal is awarded to products and services with a low environmental footprint. In March 2011, our OpenStage Voice 40 IP phones were awarded the environmental seal – in part because they consume 50 percent less power than previous models. Siemens Enterprise Communications was the first company to be honored with a Blue Angel in recognition of its efforts to protect the climate, and was presented with the award at CeBIT, the major international industry show. The Blue Angel for climate protection means Siemens Enterprise Communications is now a role model, offering phones that are both much more energy efficient and make responsible use of materials.

ISO 14001 certification

ISO 14001 is an international environmental management standard that establishes the requirements that organizations’ environmental management systems and processes must meet. The standard calls for a defined environmental policy, targets and programs, as well as the deployment of a management system that supports the achievement of targets. Around five percent of industrial companies are certified under ISO 14001; Siemens Enterprise Communications is one of them.

Award from the Bavarian Environmental Pact

Siemens Enterprise Communications has received an award in recognition of its many years of involvement in the Bavarian Environmental Pact (Umweltpakt Bayern).

The aim of the Pact, which builds on organizations’ voluntary participation, individual responsibility and collaboration, is to combine business success with long-term environmental and climate protection. In the view of Bavaria’s state government and businesses, the best way to sustain the natural foundations for life and livelihoods is through voluntary and effective collaboration between the state and industry.

Current focuses are:

• Climate and energy
• Energy-efficient construction and building remediation
• Energy efficiency in manufacturing
• Alternative drive technologies and electric mobility
• Environmental technology
• Integrated product policy (IPP) and resource efficiency
• Management systems

Reduction in travel through unified communications

As a leading supplier of unified communication solutions, Siemens Enterprise Communications offers customers the means to set up economically and environmentally efficient corporate structures and processes that enable telecollaboration, videoconferencing and optimum reachability – the right conditions to support mobile working. This means greater flexibility for employees and businesses, reduced real-estate requirements, and less need for business travel and commuting. Unified communications thus helps to reduce an organization’s carbon footprint. Siemens Enterprise Communications, of course, makes use of these capabilities in its own business.

Environmental awareness in everyday business

Siemens Enterprise Communications’ environmental awareness is also evident in everyday practices: Avoidance and separation of waste, use of recyclable and reusable packaging materials, use of energy-efficient equipment at work points, optimization of transport logistics, and many other initiatives are helping Siemens Enterprise Communications to achieve its ambitious environmental performance targets.
